As part of the ongoing refurbishment of Willoughby Leisure Centre, the Health Club (gym) remains temporarily closed. While the roof replacement works have now been completed, the current focus is on internal upgrades within the Central Spine, including:

  • Construction of a new reception area
  • Installation of new flooring
  • Design enhancements to improve functionality and appearance

We originally anticipated the closure would last 2 to 3 months from 30 June 2025. However, the works are still in progress, and the Health Club will not reopen for at least another month. We will continue to provide updates as soon as more information becomes available.

Members who continue their membership throughout this period will receive an additional 15% discount on their membership fee.

Alternatively, members may request a suspension for the work period. Suspension fees will not be applied during this impact period.

Membership Suspension Options

  • Members who wish to suspend their membership while the Health Club (gym) is closed are encouraged to extend their suspension until at least Sunday 19 October 2025.
  • Health Club-only members remain automatically suspended until the gym reopens.

Updates will be provided through the following channels:

  • Email updates
  • Updates on internal screens at the Centre
  • Our website and member portal
  • Why is the gym equipment not being relocated to another venue during the Stage 2?

A thorough feasibility assessment determined relocating the gym is not practical or cost-effective due to:

  • Complex logistics: Equipment requires specialist removalists for disassembly, transport, and reassembly, especially large strength machines needing on-site rebuilding.
  • Time and labour: Relocation would take 2–3 days for transport and setup.
  • Infrastructure demands: Cardio equipment requires reliable power and ventilation, which many alternative venues lack.
  • Were alternative venues considered?

Potential locations were reviewed, but most do not meet essential requirements such as:

  • Adequate space for gym equipment
  • Correct flooring to prevent damage
  • Power supply for cardio machines
  • Adequate ventilation
  • Showers and changerooms facilities
  • Operating hours that match user needs (6am–9pm
  • What additional improvement works are planned during stage 2?

The additional improvement works include the construction of a new reception area, installation of new flooring, and other design enhancements to improve the overall function and appearance of the facility.
