Gentle Exercise Classes

The Willoughby Leisure Centre offers a range of gentle exercise classes designed for people new to exercise and/or wanting a low impact yet effective exercise program, or are recovering from injury or a medical condition. Gentle exercise classes are not age or gender specific. Studies have proven that exercise can be used as a preventative measure to improve heart health, bone mineral density, circulation and joint function. In addition participants will challenge their cardiovascular fitness, and develop muscle strength, balance, flexibility, mobility and core stability.

Before participating in a class, new participants must complete a Pre-exercise Questionnaire (PEQ) to determine whether the individual has any pre-existing medical conditions that may be affected by participating in an exercise program.

Group Fitness classes are held at Willoughby Leisure Centre and at several off-site locations: 139 Artarmon Rd, Artarmon and the Joe Ciantor Studio in Chatswood. Please refer to the Group Fitness Timetable for class times and locations.

Active Movers is a gentle paced low impact and low complexity class designed for those who want to maintain and improve overall health and wellbeing. The comprehensive workout consists of a full body warm up, low impact movements, and functional strength exercises that target balance, flexibility and mobility. Some classes involve floor work so an ability to get down/up from the floor with minimal support is recommended. Class duration: 60 minutes.

Aqua classes make use of water and the effects it creates on the body. The natural resistance and buoyancy of water against the body provides a wide variety of conditioning and resistance activities to improve cardiovascular fitness, strength and range of movement. The buoyancy of the water means that there is no or very little impact on the joints, making it a perfect environment for those with injuries or limitations. Equipment such as dumbells and noodles may be used during the class to increase resistance, and bouyancy belts are available for all deep water classes. Aqua classes are held in either deep or shallow water, and will challenge all levels of fitness. Water confidence is recommended. Class duration: 45 minutes.

Easy Movers is a slow-paced gentle movement class for those with mobility issues and in need of improving strength, balance, posture, and coordination. A key component of the class involves chair based or chair-assisted exercises, as well as some walking and standing balance work. There will be no floor exercises in this class, and where possible the exercises will be tailored to suit the individual needs of the participant. Class duration: 45 minutes.

Mobility & Balance is an exercise program that has been specifically designed to meet the needs of the older adult and anyone restarting an exercise program after injury or has a medical condition that requires direction and supervision. This class takes place in the Health Club and with the use of resistance bands, hand weights, and balance pads, focuses on developing strength, muscle tone, mobility and balance. Bookings are recommended as class numbers are limited to six participants. Class duration: 30 minutes.

Tai Chi QiGong combines movement, breathing and meditation to revitalise the body and relax the mind. The slow rhythmic easy-to-learn movements help reduce stress, build strength, stamina and improve posture, breathing and mental focus. Class duration: 60 minutes.
